Riven: The Sequel to Myst Review
As in Myst, the graphics are brilliant and it is easy to move around and get to places to touch and look at things. Right from the start of playing it, it had me hooked.

However it was quite a shock to start the game in a prison cell and to discover my mission was to find Catherine and help her escape--again!! There are no time restrictions to the game. The new player should take

| their time exploring everything and everywhere and taking note of everything around them. Keep a notebook handy to make brief notes on and also make sure to read all the information available in the pages of the books that come up in the game. Touching everything, pressing switches and keeping notes of sequences that happen in different orders is vital. Most importantly though, SAVE OFTEN. |

I found the puzzles in this game much more satisfying to work on than in Myst. Much more stimulating and far, far more challenging. Some were almost diabolical in their devious nature, which also helps you to see what a mad man Gehn was. Well, was he mad, or just still a very angry and misunderstood man because of the loss of his wife in childbirth? It is clear he loved her dearly as you see her |
| picture and his memories of her in the game. And to take his daughter in law a prisoner…why? |
Being on the different group of islands that make Riven, and a different race, the Rivenese, I began to understand more about the D'ni people and their underground world, the islands/places like Myst and Riven that they created with their linking books and the different roles people had in the life and structure of the D'ni people. As you move through the game you encounter the D'ni symbols for numbers, which made me look more into the numbering system and then also the actual language as well.
| I would also recommend that the game player also reads the 3 novels, Book of Atrus, Book of T'iana, and the Book of the D'ni, as they give much inside hindsight and information to help them understand the games better.
As you start the game, it soon becomes clear that certain things do not work. It is therefore your task to find out how to make these elements

work. That is why looking and touching everything is so important. I hope you enjoy the game and are successful in your mission.
