| Riven begins with a return to Atrus who was met in the first Myst game. He informs you of an important mission to rescue his wife, Catherine and to capture his eccentric and erratic father, Gehn. Once this is explained you are transported to Riven and begin your adventure from behind the bars of a cage. After some time you are released and free to explore this age and everything within it.
This game expands on Myst and your understanding of the D'ni culture and civilization however first time players do not despair. This game can be enjoyed by all. I would, however, suggest playing Myst first to give you a 'feel' for the game. |

The game contains mind-bending logic puzzles that will have you spending hours working out and solving them. I found these puzzles harder than those in the original Myst however their quality is stunning. Unlike most puzzle |
| games much of Riven can be explored without solving the harder puzzles and many hours of enjoyment can be taken simply from exploring Riven and all of its sites. To get anywhere important the puzzles will have to be cracked so don’t give up! | |
| The graphics of this game are a feast for the eyes. Everything is alive from the ripples in the water, the vast numbers of animals and bugs to be found all over Riven to the movement of the clouds. The smallest details have been included to create an atmosphere that the players can immerse themselves within. The richness of the soundtrack and the sounds of the buzzing bugs and toads add to the atmosphere of the game and create a reality that is so tangible no other game has ever come close to creating. | |

Riven is a non-linear game and can be explored however the player wants to. This adds an angle not seen in many games that the player has a greater control over how they approach the game and how they complete it. This is especially true of the ending but I’m not going to say anymore on that and spoil it for you. All I will say is that there is more than one way to end it!

| This game is more than a simple puzzle solving expedition. It’s a work of art and a complete experience, which should be enjoyed and admired as you move along the journey of Myst.
